ARTIST STATEMENT

Ali McNabney-Stevens is a British artist whose work explores atmosphere, colour and the emotional resonance of everyday life. With representation in the USA, her paintings balance observation with abstraction, capturing the warmth and feeling of a scene rather than its exactness.

Using the directness and urgency of drawing from life throughout her practice, Ali responds with spontaneity in the moment while building on memory and feeling by returning to subjects again and again. Back in the studio, intuition and painterly process guide the development of the work, with layers of medium woven together through loose, expressive marks.

Drawing inspiration from still life, flora and fauna, her paintings often carry a domestic intimacy while remaining open and emotionally led. Forms drift in and out of focus through layered passages of colour and gesture, allowing atmosphere, rhythm and movement to emerge naturally across the surface. Rather than carefully recording detail, Ali leans into suggestion — inviting the viewer to experience the work through sensation and feeling as much as recognition.

Ali consistently displays her pedigree with an impressive body of work that is becoming, as is the artist. Her desire to translate and share the beauty of what she sees and remembers is, she hopes, a language without words.

Ali earned her Honours degree in Design and Art History from Edinburgh College of Art, with further fine art studies at Central Saint Martins.
